![]() ![]() ![]() The WindWorx repertoire consisted of two halves separated by a pleasant interval. The Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble opened on a festive note with a march from Gustav Holst and Adam Gorb’s Eine Kleine Yiddishe Ragmusik. ![]() Their aim is to create a platform for professionals and semi-professionals to perform wind orchestra music of an exceptional standard, and give postgraduate musicians, who might not otherwise have the chance, the opportunity of performing on a large scale in public. The WindWorx Symphonic Wind Ensemble consists of some of the finest wind and percussion musicians in the Western Cape. When the WindWorx ensemble announced their tenth anniversary concert, however, with guest appearances by the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble and Stadskoor Tygerberg, one look at the varied programme, featuring pieces ranging from Handel’s “Hallelujah” chorus to the Star Wars theme “Duel of the Fates”, suggested that this would be a performance well worth attending. After all, wind (and especially brass) bands are often associated with marching, military music and loud celebrations. One might think the complementary, soothing sound of strings would be missed. To some, it might even seem painfully exhausting. Spending an entire evening listening to a wind band might not seem as attractive as hearing a full orchestra in concert. ![]()
